                  InformationPerennial herb, with a subglobose tuberous root to 
                  c. 5 cm in diameter.Stems to 45 cm high, unbranched.Leaves to 
                  9 × 6 cm, suborbicular to ovate, sometimes reddened, both 
                  surfaces scabridulous with usually numerous stiff 
                  cartilaginous hairs, margin tightly crisped and densely hairy, 
                  midrib prominent beneath; petiole c. 6 mm long; stipules c. 
                  0.5 mm in diameter, glandular.Cymes axillary, 3–4-forked; 
                  peduncles to c. 8 cm long, cyme branches to 15 mm long, both 
                  with conspicuous scattered cartilaginous prickles 0.2–1 mm 
                  long; bracts joined in a bract-cup enveloping the cyathium, c. 
                  10 × 16 mm, shallowly notched between rounded lobes, whitish 
                  with dark green to purplish veining and the surface with 
                  scattered cartilaginous outgrowths.Cyathia c. 5 × 4 mm, with 
                  cup-shaped involucres; glandular rim 1.25 mm high, white; 
                  lobes 1 × 1 mm, rounded, denticulate.Male flowers: bracteoles 
                  few, 2 mm long; stamens 3 mm long.Female flower: ovary covered 
                  with cartilaginous hairs 0.2–0.5 mm long; styles 2 mm long, 
                  joined to nearly halfway, shortly bifid at the apex.Capsule 5 
                  × 4 mm, obtusely lobed, surface cartilaginous and wrinkled, 
                  exserted on a reflexed pedicel c. 5 mm long.Seeds 3 × 1.25 mm, 
                  oblong, 4-angled, minutely verrucose, pale brown; caruncle 
                  cap-like, 1 mm in diameter, stipitate, yellow.
